CHAPTER SIXTEEN

By the time we get home, my family is back from judo, and Dad invites Pete and Riven to stay for lunch. But then after lunch, Mom implies that it’s family time and basically kicks Pete and Riven out. So despite a nagging feeling of discomfort and urgency that follows me around all day, the three of us don’t get a chance to review and discuss the papers and numbers until that evening.

We share the pictures we all took and then start a group chat.

Pete: so … numerology?

Riven: From what I can tell from Googling it this afternoon, it seems to just be a belief that different numbers have different significance

Pete: so if 1 black cat crosses your path it’s bad luck, but if 7 cross your path it’s good luck, and if 19 cross your path you’re probably going to die?

Riven: Yes, exactly that. You’re 100% accurate.

Me: bahahhaak

Pete: is it used with witchcraft?

Riven: Yeah, I think so, maybe?

Me: Did you guys see the numbers circled on that clipboard picture?

Riven: No, let me look

I pull up one of the pictures I took of the clipboard, scanning down to the bottom of the page. The last several lines are all dated from this past week. I check the dates against the calendar on my phone. There are three from Sunday, three from Wednesday, and three from Friday. The numbers in the final, fifth column from Sunday and Wednesday are circled, with the word Why?!? scrawled beside them.

Pete: 111, 117, 121, 113, 118, 119?

I check the numbers Pete’s recited with the circled ones in the picture.

Me: Yep, those are the ones

Riven: Ooh 111! I remember reading something about that when I was looking up numerology

Riven: Yeah here it is

Riven: 111 is supposed to remind you to rely on your inner wisdom

Riven: It’s about bringing out the best in yourself

Me: That doesn’t sound very sinister

Riven: Why would it be sinister?

Me: You know … witchcraft …

Riven: Witchcraft doesn’t have to be sinister. Isn’t one of the core tenets of Wicca “harm none”?

Me: Is it? Huh

Pete: so not all witches have pointy hats and black cats? lol

Me: What’s with you and black cats today?

Pete: a black cat is my familiar

Me: Your familiar isn’t a black cat. It’s … a seahorse

Riven: Oh, yes, definitely a seahorse!

Pete: no way! if not a black cat, then definitely a t-rex!

Me: Can familiars be extinct animals?

Riven: Oh most def! Mine’s totally a big-ol trilobite, and everyone’s going to be like “WTF is that!” when it comes crawling up to me!

Me: lol

I look at the photo of the clipboard again. My eyes scan over the dates. What numbers did they record on the date Riven and I saw them create the shadowy wisp? I check the date in my calendar, then find it near the top of the page. Fifty-five, forty-four, forty-two. What do all these numbers mean?

We spend the next hour researching numerology and the meaning of numbers and how they relate to witchcraft, but nothing fits. Finally Riven
